JUNE 2015 TRAIL RUN --- WINDY HILL

SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 2015

A shaded switch-backed and runnable climb brings us to one of the most inspiring vistas in the Bay area with surreal grass covered hills dropping away at your feet towards the Bay, with views of the Pacific, Mt. Diablo, Mt. Tam, and the San Andreas Fault all right there on a clear day. This run is close to Palo Alto, so no surprise that Windy Hill is PARC's favorite Monthly Trail Run route.

When Sunday June 14, 2015. Meet at 8:20am for an 8:30am start. As this trailhead is just a few miles from Palo Alto, no club organized carpool this month.

Where
Windy Hill Open Space Preserve, Portola Road, Portola, CA. No parking fee. More park info can be found here.

How to get there The parking lot for the lower portion of the preserve is located on Portola Road. From the 280 & Alpine Road interchange go south on Alpine Road about 2.9 miles to Portola Road (the first stop sign). Turn right on Portola Road and travel 0.8 miles to the parking lot on the left side of the road. Here is the Google Maps location.

What A long run (about 12.35 miles, 1,500 feet vertical) and an intermediate run (about 8 miles, 1,400 feet vertical).

As these are remote trail runs, each runner is encouraged to carry at least one water bottle. To avoid having to search for lost runners we ask that runners of approximately the same ability and ambition form groups and be accountable for group members.

No after run tailgate potluck this month as we will gather at Konditorei (yelp 4.5 stars), a small friendly coffee shop just a few minutes from the trail head. We will likely be sitting outside, so come find us here after the run (about 10:30).

Trail Maps

OpenSpace.org's map for the Windy Hill OSP can be found here. At the run we will provide printed maps with trail segments numbered to show the route (see below). All distances are approximate. The first mile of the run can be a bit confusing as several small trail segments are not named or signed. The basic idea is to follow trails South to the Hamms Gulch Trail. The long and intermediate runners follow the same route for the first part of the run. Click on the map to enlarge it.
